Shaping Monroe’s Future
Navigating the 2025-2026 Fiscal Year Budget
By Mayor Robert Burns
Monroe, NC, is booming—our economy is thriving, businesses are growing, and our #MonroeStrong spirit is unstoppable. But with great growth comes great responsibility. On Tuesday, April 22, our City Council got down to brass tacks—pun intended—tackling the 2025-2026 fiscal year budget, starting July 1. As your mayor, I’m determined to keep taxes low, reduce our debt burden, and deliver the services our citizens deserve, all while navigating the challenges of the Union County reassessment.
Our exceptional staff has worked tirelessly, making tough cuts to present a balanced budget. But we’re not stopping there—we need creative solutions to fund critical priorities. A Cost of Living Increase (COLI) for our dedicated staff is a must; they keep Monroe running. We’re pushing for $2 million more for road improvements—those potholes need fixing. And six new firefighter positions are essential to ensure fully staffed crews, keeping our community safe. These aren’t just numbers; they’re investments in our people and our future.
The Union County reassessment has added pressure, shifting property values and impacting homeowners and businesses. To ease this burden, I’ve asked our administration to dig into our city’s $250 million investment portfolio. Can we leverage these funds for roads, safety, or staff support without touching taxes? I’m also requesting a detailed breakdown of our $25 million fund balance requirement—what can we use to lighten the reassessment’s load? These answers will guide us in the next few meetings before the final budget vote.
I’m committed to no tax increases and cutting our debt service, freeing up dollars for what matters: you. From parks to public safety, we’ll protect services that make Monroe a haven for families and a hub for investors. Transparency is my pledge—Tuesday’s meeting was open, and we want your input. Join us at City Hall for the next sessions, follow our social media, or comment on our Facebook page. Our staff’s hard work and your voices will shape a budget that delivers.
